Catamenial pneumothorax: a rare entity? Report of 5 cases and review of the literature.
This study reports five surgical cases of catamenial pneumothorax and reviews literature, concluding that surgery is the primary treatment, with recurrence being the most common complication.

This paper studied catamenial pneumothorax, reporting five surgically treated women with right-sided recurrent pneumothorax occurring during menstruation, and reviewing related literature. Using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and, in some cases, diaphragmatic repair or plication plus pleurodesis/pleurectomy and resection of abnormal lung parenchyma, the authors found diaphragmatic perforations in three patients; however, histology did not reveal endometriosis tissue. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, but recurrence occurred in one patient 6.5 months after surgery, attributed to an uncoupled tiny diaphragmatic hole and lack of postoperative hormonal therapy; after GnRH-analogue–induced amenorrhea, she had no further recurrences. This paper is centrally about endometriosis-related catamenial pneumothorax, which is associated with thoracic endometriosis and pelvic endometriosis, making it directly relevant to endometriosis and (in the cited background context of endometriosis-associated disease) also relevant to adenomyosis as a related hormone-responsive gynecologic condition.
