Challenges in endometriosis miRNA studies — From tissue heterogeneity to disease specific miRNAs
This review examines endometriosis miRNA studies, highlighting how tissue heterogeneity, from whole lesions to isolated cells, may explain the low concordance of reported disease-specific microRNAs.

This review examines microRNA (miRNA) studies in endometriosis, including analyses of endometriotic lesions, endometrial biopsies, and isolated stromal or epithelial cell fractions, which have collectively reported many dysregulated miRNAs. It highlights that concordance across studies is low, and proposes tissue composition heterogeneity as a key reason, noting that comparisons range from whole heterogeneous lesion biopsies to endometrium from patients versus controls and to purified cell fractions. The paper also summarizes functional studies aimed at characterizing roles of miRNAs implicated in endometriosis. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it reviews miRNA findings and argues that tissue heterogeneity contributes to discrepancies in identifying disease-specific endometriosis miRNA alterations.
