Abstract

Pelvic infections are common problems affecting women globally, with serious sequelae for future reproductive health. The cause of the infections can be spontaneous or a consequence of therapeutic intervention. A variety of organisms may be involved, but sexually transmitted infections are the most common cause. There may be a range of presentations from subclinical to widespread sepsis. Therapy is effective for acute infections but may not prevent long-term complications; chronic pelvic pain is one of the more difficult of these.
