Abstract
Intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) is an imaging technique already used in different surgical scenarios, nevertheless only few case series have been published on the role of IOUS in gynecologic surgery. The aim of this study was to describe all cases needing of an IOUS in gynecological surgery, to evaluate feasibility, indications and success rate. All consecutive women scheduled for surgery and undergoing IOUS were included. IOUS was performed with different approaches and different ultrasound probes (laparoscopic, laparotomic, transvaginal) (fig). The study period was 15 months. Surgical and sonographic data were collected, as well as final histology and follow-up data. 72 patients were selected. The most frequent indication for surgery was suspicion of gynecological tumour recurrence (54.1%), and the most frequent surgical approach during IOUS procedure was endoscopic (standard LPS + robot assisted surgery, 56.9%). Most frequent indication for IOUS was to identify the lesion not detectable during surgery, but reported on preoperative imaging (45.8%), followed by exclusion of the presence of residual lesion (33.3%). IOUS outcome has been considered successful in 95.8% of cases and feasibility was achieved in all cases.
