Superficial Peritoneal Endometriosis: Clinical Characteristics of 203 Confirmed Cases and 1292 Endometriosis-Free Controls
Isolated superficial peritoneal endometriosis was associated with lower body weight, increased smoking, familial history, primary infertility, dysmenorrhea, and dyspareunia.

This study characterized isolated superficial peritoneal endometriosis (SUP) by analyzing 203 women with histologically confirmed SUP and 1,292 endometriosis-free surgical controls, all non-pregnant and aged 18–42, who underwent laparoscopy or laparotomy for benign gynecologic conditions. Using face-to-face interviews, preoperative exams, transvaginal ultrasound, and multivariable logistic regression to adjust for confounders, the authors found SUP was associated with lower body weight/BMI and higher frequencies of smoking and positive family history of endometriosis, and it showed increased risk of primary infertility, moderate-to-intense dysmenorrhea, and moderate-to-intense deep dyspareunia. A key limitation is that the sample was drawn from surgical patients and excludes other endometriosis types, which may limit generalizability beyond this setting. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it focuses on clinical characteristics and symptom/infertility associations of isolated superficial peritoneal endometriosis.
